Laser Ectopic Ureter Correction in Scottsdale, AZ

Laser ectopic ureter correction is a minimally invasive procedure that restores proper urine flow into the bladder in pets with ectopic ureters and urinary incontinence. At Salt River Veterinary Specialists, our specialists use a cystoscope to diagnose and treat the problem in the same procedure, with no external incisions and a quick return home for most pets.

What Are Ectopic Ureters?

Ectopic ureters are a congenital condition in which one or both ureters, the tubes carrying urine from the kidneys, bypass the normal opening in the bladder and empty further down into the urethra or vagina. Because urine bypasses the bladder’s control mechanism, affected pets leak urine constantly or intermittently. Most are young female dogs, and breeds such as Siberian Huskies, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Newfoundlands are at higher risk.

Diagnosis With Cystoscopy

Before treatment, our internal medicine specialists perform urinalysis, urine culture, and abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the kidneys and urinary tract. The definitive diagnosis is made with cystoscopy, which allows our specialist to see exactly where each ureter opens. In most cases, correction can be performed immediately during the same anesthesia.

How the Laser Procedure Works

Most ectopic ureters in dogs are intramural, meaning they tunnel within the wall of the bladder and urethra before opening in the wrong place. Using a cystoscope and a surgical laser, our specialist removes the excess tissue that forms the tunnel, moving the opening back into the bladder where it belongs. This video shows a laser ectopic ureter correction from the view of the cystoscope. No external incisions are required, and the procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

Benefits Over Traditional Surgery

  • No abdominal incision or bladder surgery
  • Diagnosis and treatment in a single anesthetic episode
  • Less pain and faster recovery
  • Most pets go home the same or next day
  • Most pets gain improved urinary continence within a few days

Some pets, particularly those with extramural ectopic ureters that bypass the bladder entirely, may require open surgery by our surgical team.

After the Procedure

Many pets show improvement in leaking within days. Some continue to leak because of a weak urethral sphincter, a common concurrent problem, and may benefit from medication or additional minimally invasive procedures. We schedule follow-up urinalysis and imaging to monitor for infection and track progress, and we coordinate closely with your family veterinarian. Related conditions such as vaginal webs can also be corrected with the laser, as described on our cystoscopy page and our reproductive surgical conditions page.

Pets with other urinary concerns may be evaluated for bladder stones, laser stone removal, or urinary stenting. Explore all veterinary services or review payment options.

Laser Ectopic Ureter Correction FAQs

Is laser ectopic ureter correction surgery?

It is a minimally invasive surgery performed through the urethra with a cystoscope and laser, so no external incision is needed.

How soon will my pet stop leaking?

Most pets gain urinary continence within a few days, though some need medication for full control.

Is my pet asleep during the procedure?

Yes. General anesthesia is required, and our team monitors your pet closely throughout.

Can diagnosis and treatment happen on the same day?

Yes. In most cases, the ectopic ureter is confirmed with cystoscopy and corrected during the same anesthesia.

What if my pet still leaks after correction?

Residual leaking is often due to a weak urethral sphincter and may respond to medication or additional treatment.

Can male dogs be treated with this procedure?

Male dogs can sometimes be treated with specialized scopes, though the approach may differ. Our specialist will discuss options.

How long will my pet stay in the hospital?

Most pets go home the same day or the following day.
